massarrah:“The Hanging Gardens of Babylon”. Coloured engraving from Robert von Spalart, Costumes, manners, customs and material culture in Antiquity and the Middle Ages (ca. 1804-1811). (Source: Wellcome Collection)Berossus (c. 3rd century BCE), the Babylonian priest and scholar of the Hellenistic period in Mesopotamia, attributed the gardens to Nebuchadnezzar II (605-562 BCE), the Neo-Babylonian king famous for his statesmanship and immense building works. One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the so-called “Hanging Gardens of Babylon” remained elusive until recent research by Stephanie Dalley, whose meticulous work on and synthesis of multiple sources from the period have shown that the gardens were actually in Nineveh. -- source link
