Portrait of Madame Geoffrin (1738). Jean-Marc Nattier (French, 1685-1766). Oil on canvas. Tokyo Fuji Art Museum. Marie-Thérèse Rodet Geoffrin was a French hostess whose salon in the Hôtel de Rambouillet was an international meeting place of artists and men of letters. Although lacking formal education herself, Madame Geoffrin was sensitive, an excellent listener, and naturally intelligent. Nattier depicting her with an open book suggests her education and intelligence. -- source link
