Strange Lovers, part IV “The further away from the kingdom they went, the colder the land became. The melancholy of autumn gave way to the biting winter frost, but they trudged on. When they reached the northern valley, they were met with a gruesome effigy: Giant corpses, hung by the bones upon great pyres. Buried under the snow here were the remains of the Giant’s kingdom, and no doubt many dead lay beneath the ice and earth as well. The ogress stood there silent. It had been years since she’d been back at her home, but now there was nothing to see, no one to greet, no building left standing to shelter in. The emptiness before her felt heavy in her chest. The knight shared in her moment of silence. He too knew the anguish of loss, the death of friend and family.
