The Japanese Pedersen RifleDuring the 30’s to the end of World War II the Japanese had a rich tradition of copying foreign designs and doing so very badly. The Japanese Pedersen Rifle was no exception. After failing to gain interest for his rifle in the United States and Great Britain John Pedersen tried to sell his rifle design to Japan. The Japanese however created their own copy that was very different from the original Pedersen design. Instead of using and en bloc magazine the Japanese created their own rotery spool magazine, which barely fit the rifle. Moisture and crud often gathered in the magazine causing malfunctions and even swelling of the wood causing the stock to crack. Furthermore the Japanese did not bother to lubricate their cartridges causing chronic failures. Only 2 dozen rifles and carbines would be made, and the design was rejected by the Japanese Army. -- source link
