Working on a meta about flowers in S4, because there are so many of them, and picking up from the last meta I read about them, which happened after TSoT. Peonies: According to the legend, Paeon was a student of Aesculapius, the god of medicine. When Paeon used a peony root to heal Pluto — the first time this was tried — Aesculapius became jealous of his talents and tried to kill him. To save Paeon (and show compassion to him), Pluto transformed him into a peony, because he knew it was a flower that people would admire and praise. Thus, one peony meaning is compassion.Peonies are also the state flower of Indiana, which is where HOUND took place. Peonies are representative of doctors. The inverted vase pouring out water is a symbol for The East Wind, and the East Wind had a brother named Zephyr, the protector of horses. Rosemund means horse. Invert was also a Victorian term for homosexual. One of the surviving myths in which Zephyrus features most prominently is that of Hyacinth. Hyacinth was a very handsome and athletic Spartan prince. Zephyrus fell in love with him and courted him, and so did Apollo. The two competed for the young man’s love, but he chose Apollo, driving Zephyrus mad with jealousy. Later, catching Apollo and Hyacinth throwing a discus, Zephyrus blew a gust of wind at them, striking the Hyacinth in the head with the falling discus. When Hyacinth died, Apollo created the hyacinth flower from his blood. Apollo was furious, but Eros protected Zephyrus, as the act was committed in the name of love, on the condition that the wind god served Eros forever. In the story of Cupid and Psyche, Zephyrus served Eros (or Cupid) by transporting Psyche to his abode. -- source link
