The Mesha Stele, created ca. 840 BCE in modern-day Jordan by Mesha, king of Moab. This inscription is the oldest reference to the Jewish god Yahweh outside of the Bible, and confirms some events in Biblical history. The stele was destroyed in 1869 by the Bani Hamida tribe of Bedouins in Jordan out of anger that the Ottoman government might force them to hand the stele over to German scholars.
