autisticliving:Specialisterne (Danish for “The Specialists”) is a non-profit organization with a clear goal - to provide one million productive and meaningful jobs for autistic people worldwide. Their goal is to show the world and the companies in it that with the right support and the right accommodations, an autistic adult might not just be able to manage a job - they might even be the best person for it. Specialisterne was created in Denmark in 2003 and is now working at creating jobs and opportunities for autistic adults in many different countries. They currently have departments in Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom and USA. Specialisterne was created by Torkild Sonne, a parent of an autistic child who wouldn’t accept that our society isn’t willing to or capable of including and accepting his son and other people like him. He sat out to show that autistic brains aren’t just inferior, disordered brains - that there are perks of having an autistic brain, that autistic people can often contribute with things that neurotypicals can’t, and that hiring an autistic person doesn’t have to be a burden on your company. He supports and agrees with the motto of the neurodiversity movement - “different not less” - and wants to show everyone that while an autistic brain is different. the difference isn’t inherently negative, and that having diverse brains working for your company can be a strength. Specialisternes logo is a dandelion seed, and there’s a reason for that: “To most people, the dandelion is nothing more than an annoying weed – something to be rooted out of our lawns and flower beds. But what a lot of people do not know is that, when cultivated, the dandelion is one of the most valuable and useful plants in nature. The dandelion is known for its nutritional, healing and medicinal properties. The value of a dandelion is very much dependent on our knowledge and perception of its value. So is a dandelion a weed or an herb?A weed is a plant in an environment where it is not welcomed. If the plant is transferred to an environment where it is welcomed – it turns into an herb. We have chosen the seed of the dandelion as our logo to remind everyone that we all have the potential to realize our potential if welcomed and understood. It is the settings we end up in that determines if we will be able to grow or wither.”Specialisterne is working on showing companies worldwide the perks of providing an autistic employee with the accommodations and the support that they need to thrive and they’re working on making everyone see the potential in autistic brains and the strength in neurodiversity. Autistic brains aren’t wrong, less than or broken and it’s time to make the world realize this so that we can put an end to the staggering unemployment statistics for autistic adults.Read more on specialisterne.com and specialisternefoundation.com -- source link
