useless-catalanfacts:Diada nacional de Catalunya, 1936 a Barcelona.Barcelona, 1936: Demonstration on Catalonia’s national day, which commemorates September 11th 1714, the day that Barcelona had to surrender after a year-long siege and, as a result, Catalonia was invaded by Castile (Spain). In the photos you can see the estelada, the flag of Catalan independence, and the attendants doing the leftist salute (the raised fist). These two elements can be seen exactly the same in the protests that Catalan people still do every year on September 11th to demand freedom. It’s also worth noticing the important amount of women and their great job. 1936 is the year that the fascist general Franco led the Spanish army to give a coup d’etat, but was met with resistance from the people, one of the places where antifascist resistance was stronger was Catalonia. The antifascist side of the Spanish Civil War was well known for the involvement of women in the fight and in politics, and this is a good example of this. In this demonstration, women can be seen raising their fist right next to men in an equal position, and there’s also many women who were raising money collecting donations or by selling flags in order to send funds to the antifascist fighters. -- source link
