The T20 GarandDuring World War II the M1 Garand gave the average American infantryman unparalleled firepower. Sure, other nations, both Axis and Allied, had semi-automatic designs. The Germans even had a modern assault rifle with the STG 44. However, no other nation was able to produce a semi automatic rifle in enough quantities to make it their standard military firearm. In 1943, John C. Garand began work on a Garand variant that would increase it’s firepower even further. The new T20 was a prototype inspired by creations of individual soldiers and Marines who modified their Garands for more firepower. The T20 was a select fire weapon that was both semi automatic and fully automatic. The T20 was modified to accept 20 round detachable magazines from the Browning Automatic Rifle. Since the .30-06 cartridge would have been difficult to control when firing a fully automatic firearm, the T20 also featured a muzzle break to reduced recoil and muzzle climb.Only a handful of prototypes were produced, which are now on display at the Springfield Armory Museum. Prototypes were also produced with a pistol grip, and a light machine gun version with a bipod. None were ever mass produced. -- source link
