America’s first bolt action metallic cartridge firearm, the Palmer Carbine,Patented by William Palmer in 1863, the Palmer Carbine was the first metallic cartridge bolt action rifle accepted by US Army Ordnance. The carbine featured a short bolt action which exposed the breech and ejected spent cartridge casings. Single shot only, the user then inserted a .50 caliber rimfire cartridge and closed the bolt. The bolt, however, did not have a firing pin, to fire the user had to cock the hammer each time after loading.A unique design that would have certainly been handy in the Civil War, they were introduced shortly after the war ended. Manufactured by E.G. Lamson and Company of Windsor, Vermont, 1,001 Palmer carbines were delivered to the US Army in June of 1865. Afterwards they were sold as military surplus as the design was later rejected in favor of the Trapdoor Springfield. -- source link
