humanoidhistory:Happy Birthday to astronaut Deke Slayton, born on March 1, 1924 in Sparta, Wisconsin. After being selected as one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts, he was grounded in 1962 before he could travel to space because of an atrial fibrilliation, an irregular heart rhythm. He then served as NASA’s Director of Flight Crew Operations for almost a decade from 1963 until 1972 when he was granted medical clearance to fly. At age 51, Slayton flew on the 1975 Apollo-Soyuz Test Project mission, becoming the oldest person to go to space at the time. He passed away in 1993 at the age of 69. -- source link
