lizdexia:onlyleigh:“There’s a lot to be said for making people laugh. Did you know that that’s all some people have? It isn’t much, but it’s better than nothing in this cockeyed caravan.” -sullivan’s Travels This post so sums up the differences between the film and TV departments at my school and I’m so glad I’m in the latter. Not that there aren’t okay people in the film school, but the faculty is so concerned with the artistic integrity of their stuff. Meanwhile in the TVR department, it’s like, “Can you make this thing good, but also COOL? Cool enough that Netflix will want to buy it?” Which drives some people crazy, but I think that’s good. That’s the industry. The focus is on quality but also appeal, and the importance of the latter cannot be overstated. You can learn about auteur theory on your own if you care that much about it. But also, never forget that things that are “brave” and “important” can also make people laugh. You can make something that challenges the audience but goes down easy. That’s the whole concept behind satire (real satire, not, like, “my statement offended someone so now I’m going to claim that it was satirical”). -- source link
