fordarkmornings: Women Painting Women Laura Knight (British, 1877–1970) Self Portrait with Nude, 1913. Laura was 13 when, in 1890, she was first enrolled at the art school in Nottingham; in those days, girls were not allowed to draw from nude models in the life class. Flashforward to 1913, Knight painted herself painting a nude model; her friend, the enamellist Ella Naper. Knight’s art is intensely social. She wants to show individuals – women, mostly – as they fill out their public form, their role. Knight’s portraits were once derided as ‘vulgar’ and shunned for being too straightforward. Knight’s success in the male-dominated British art establishment paved the way for greater status and recognition for women artists. -- source link
