Ma Yanling is a conceptual artist who uses painting, photography and performance to explore a variety of themes. Ma’s Suitcase (2001), Closet (2001) and Net (2001) series of photographs feature the anguished figure of a bound nude woman. Art writer Li Xianting relates the works to Japanese artist Araki Nobuyoshi’s photographs of bound up women that ‘forcefully expressed Japanese repressed sexuality’. Li refers to the use of silk ribbons as the most interesting element of the work. “The sleekness of the ribbon surface and the curvature of the knots emphasise the suppleness and flexibility of the female form, increasing the figure’s sensual allure and beauty.” via fluffy Lychees: Ma Yanling -- source link
