romegreeceart:A so called “Barber Cup” from British MuseumThis drinking vessel is carved fluorite, a material Romans craved and valued highly. According to Pliny the Elder they were also willing to squander ridiculous amounts of money to acquire such a rarities. Pliny tells us that one former Consul paid 70 000 Sestertii for a single fluorite goblet. Emperor Nero scored off though, since he splurged one million Sestertii for a set of fluorite chalices. This particular cup dates back to 100 CE and was found in Eastern Turkey during the World War One.Source: By The Land (Own work) [CC-BY-SA-3.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0)], via Wikimedia Commons -- source link
