misandry-mermaid:whatmariadidnext:two4fit:TABLOID HEADLINES WITHOUT THE SEXISM“WOMAN IN TRACKSUIT PROBABLY NOT DISOWNED BY ENTIRE FAMILY”It’s interesting how these tabloids use the phrase “show off”. Because in most understandings of that phrase, to “show off” means to make a purposeful effort to get attention. But this site (and others like it) use that term to basically mean to have a body part… “Hilary Duff shows off shapely legs in skintight jeans…” Or she wore jeans outside? By using the non-passive term “show off”, these sites essentially put the blame on the celebrities for any and all attention they get, rather than imply that they made these clothing choices based on their own desire and comfort level and are the non-consenting target of creepy photographers. Wearing any clothing outside that reveals a part of your body is “showing off” that body part. Even if it’s just the shape of your goddamn legs!! This type of language manipulation is, quite essentially, victim blaming. And let’s not ignore the way the narrative targets skinny women for not showing enough skin and larger women for showing too much. (seriously, not to defend Lena Dunham as a person but what about her shorts are unflattering? The fact that her legs are exposed in them?) -- source link
