pandacommander24a:humanoidhistory:TODAY IN HISTORY: Mikhail Kalashnikov, inventor of the AK-47, was born in Russia on November 10, 1919. Drafted into the Red Army in 1938, he was wounded while serving in a tank regiment at the Battle of Bryansk in October 1941. Recovering in a hospital, he overheard some soldiers conversing about the low quality of Soviet rifles. This was the inspiration that began Kalashnikov’s quest to develop the dependable assault rifle that came to be known as the AK-47, the iconic weapon of choice for millions of soldiers, revolutionaries, and warlords for over half a century. The highly romanticized AK has received shout-outs on African flags and in Tarantino films, while varying estimates show that every year tens of thousands of deaths come from the business end of a Kalashnikov rifle, predominantly in conflict zones like Syria.Kalashnikov passed away in 2013 at the age of 94 in Izhevsk, Russia.(Sources: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)“People often ask me how I feel about my invention being used to kill people every day and the AK being a common weapon of ethnic conflicts. I want to make it clear that I created my assault rifle to protect my country. You can blame politicians for its spreading out of control on a global scale.”“I made it to protect the motherland.” -Mikhail Kalashnikov -- source link
