House of Cadmus - Cursed Necklace of HarmoniaAn oinochoe painting where Eriphyle, queen of Argos, receives the necklace of Harmonia from Polynices (son of Oedipus). Latter was a former “king” of Thebes who was kicked out of the city by his brother Eteocles.Furious Polynices tried to organize a war against his sibling and seeked an alliance with powerful state of Argos. Things didn’t go according to plans though, since Amphiaraus, the king of Argos, wasn’t too enthusiastic about the venture. The reason is pretty clear - the king was also a famous and celebrated seer and he knew that he would perish in such a war. Oedipus’ son found a way though and he bribed queen Eriphyle with a family heirloom, necklace of Harmonia. Eventually the grateful queen managed to persuade his husband to join the alliance against his best knowledge. Before his departure to war, the distressed king asked his sons to avenge his coming death. As expected, Amphiarus was killed in a battle and consequently queen Eriphyle was murdered by one of her sons.(so one might claim that the Necklace of Harmonia struck again) An Attic red-figure oinochoe, 450-440 BCEsource: Marie-Lan Nguyen (Own work) [Public domain or Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons -- source link
