In the center of this image (from an 1839 map), you can see the “Mountains of Kong,” a fake mountain range that appeared on European maps of Africa for much of the nineteenth century. The mountains first appeared in a 1798 map based on the explorations of Mungo Park, a Scottish explorer. Even though other travelers never found these mountains, they continued to be standard on maps until the 1880s. They even showed up on a world atlas in 1995.{WHF} {HTE} {Medium} -- source link
