peashooter85:The Springfield Model 1901,It is common knowledge that after the Spanish American War, the US Army sought a new rifle based upon the Mauser, the rifle US serviceman faced during the war. In 1903 the M1903 Springfield was adopted, with many Mauser features such as a five round staggered box magazine and a Mauser style bolt, the 1903 Springfield was exactly what the Army wanted. However, what many people don’t know is that in 1901 another bolt action rifle was adopted that had all the same features. Called the M1901 Springfield, it was a carbine developed specifically for the cavalry. It was chambered for the .30-03 cartridge. They were only produced in limited numbers. More than anything they were created to test the new design that would become the M1903, work out the flaws, and create new improvements based on practical real world use. Today they are extremely rare and it is unknown how many still exist. The rifle above belonged to Col. Berkley R. Lewis, a collector and writer. It sold at auction for $37,950 -- source link
