thesmallgarden:plantyhamchuk:misadventured-piteous-overthrows:plantyhamchuk:biodiverseed:Gifts for Gardeners#40: A Butterfly HouseAs with homes for bees, bats, and birds, a butterfly house is a space designed with the kinds of spaces butterflies seek out in nature in mind. These boxes are homes for butterflies that over-winter as adults, and also shelters for butterflies during exceptionally inclement weather.Image: Joyful ButterflyAnyone know if this would just become a great habitat for cabbage moths / Pieris rapae? This is such a cute idea but wow am I really battling to save my broccoli.Hey! I just read an article on organic pest control and they recommend pouring soured milk on plants that are infected with cabbage loopers! Sounds gross but I can send ya the link if you’re interested. It was full of good companion plants that repel certain bugsYessss I need all data! Any idea if sour soymilk works? I finally found and applied some ancient neem oil yesterday, but it’s too early to tell how much it helped. All these plants are near the house so they can be properly sheltered and cared for, but this means that we can’t rely on the birds to help us - they wisely avoid our rodent-slaughtering cats. Not sure of the best solution once a plant has an infestation, but the best preventative for loopers on any cole crop is a physical barrier. Fine mesh that still lets all the light through but keeps the bugs out works wonders. Plus there is no messy spraying or possibility of burning during the warmer seasons AND you can use it year to year. Pretty nifty. That makes a lot of sense. Thanks! -- source link
