The Series that Saved 2016MarvelandPonder already fangirled about this series but I simply love it too much not to talk about it. Especially with the last few episodes that simply blew my mind. Warning: Extreme Spoilers Ahead!!!This relationship. Victor and Yuri are one of the most beautiful ships I have ever seen and my legitimate OTP (I don’t really ship so it’s not hard to have one). It’s one of the only romantic relationships I’ve ever really cheered for, and it’s not just because it’s a same-gender relationship (although that is amazing and I will talk about it later). They are shown to have such a healthy and pure relationship. When they are upset with each other, they express that in a healthy way and eventually work through it. They both want what’s best for each other but don’t neglect their own needs either. We saw both Victor and Yuri hurt by the other, expressing it, and their partner trying to learn from their mistakes in the future. It’s honestly so nice to see this kind of communication and unconditional love instead of the usual “miscommunication causing relationship trouble” trope.Look at this beauty! Look at the love in their eyes!!! It just feels so good!! They really love each other and this show has shown it so well without ever turning it into cheap fanservice (*cough* yaoi). Their relationship is strong, healthy, and just perfect representation (finally) for the lgbt+ community. As a side point, this series was truly beautifully animated, especially towards the end of the series.Even though some people still deny the gay (don’t know how), moments like this are so amazing and positive. I mean, they exchange rings, encourage and appreciate each other, then walk away with their arms around each other. I told MarvelandPonder earlier that so often, series tend to have really close moments between characters (especially men), only to have a nearly literal “no homo” where they show that the character is obviously straight. This show could have gone this route, but instead, it just kept getting gayer!!! Even other characters were allowed to be queer. This scene took a description that would normally be applied to a man and a woman and applied it to 2 men. It shows that people around the world found this moment sweet and potentially romantic and didn’t try to do the usual hetero-splaining that seems to happen all the fucking time. Even earlier in the series, Yuri thought of Eros as a pork cutlet bowl, when most people would think of sexy people, which I like to interpret as Yuri being ace-spec. Then he thought of himself as more feminine and he was just allowed to think that way without trying to force an explanation for it. This show provided so many moments of queerness and never tried to cover it up (except with Victor’s arm in the kiss scene). Then, this moment happened. Chris points out the matching rings and Phichit assumes that Victor and Yuri were married. Phichit’s reaction was nothing but positive. He responded with extreme happiness and even announced it to the other restaurant patrons who were also all supportive.Even look at the reactions of everyone else. His dance instructor and sister are both just confused and disbelieving if anything. Chris looks so happy for them. Otabek claps for them, even while looking emotionless. And Yurio looks pissed off (likely because he wasn’t invited to the wedding). My point being, no one reacts negatively to the idea that these two were married. There were no questions of “wait, are you gay?” or anything besides utmost acceptance. And honestly, this point made me cry. To just see this world were queerness is instantly accepted and even encouraged, it’s just so beautiful and important to me.After Victor clears up that they are actually not marriage rings (they’re engagement rings), everyone only gets tense when he says that Yuri is going to win a gold first. After all, they are there to compete. But none of that tension came from their relationship. The thing that really killed me was the gala skate. This moment is both incredibly gay, and incredibly public. Once again, this show creates a world where men pair skating to a romantic song is actually allowed. This moment also expresses so much intimacy, trust, and love between the two. It shows they can both participate in the sport they love while maintaining their relationship. It once again shows the general acceptance of queerness. It really reinforces their relationship without making things so perfect that a second season would be too hard.TLDR: this show is a thing of beauty and I will defend Victuuri with my life. -- source link
