Slump foldingThis sequence of folded layers is a slump fold, formed when sediment falls on a slope and begins to move under the influence of gravity (or other similar stress).Slump folds form when a sequence of layers breaks loose from the layers below and begins moving downward. The movement causes the soft layers to bend and fold, producing structures within a sequence of otherwise undisturbed bed layers.When these folds are found within sedimentary sequences, they can be used as an indicator of the original slope the layers were deposited on.
