A Duel of LoveIt was not uncommon throughout history for gentleman of esteem to duel over matters of honor or perhaps the love of a woman, but duels between woman over the love of a man occurred as well.In the 1550’s Fabio de Zeresola was the most handsome and attractive hunk in all of Naples.  However, there were two competitors for Zeresola’s love, Isabella de Carazzi and Diambra de Pettinella each of whom were literally willing to kill for the heart of Zeresola.  To settle the dispute both women agreed to a public duel with swords and bucklers (a type of light shield).  Apparently the duel was a great source of gossip for the time as legends of it continued for decades.  The winner of the duel, unfortunately, has been lost to history.  However the memory of the duel would live on as it became the subject of a painting by the Spanish artist Jose de Riberta called the “Duel of Women”, painted in 1636.  -- source link
