lordlingcaliborn:celynbrum:pragmatician:randumbstuffs:ideasphere:Dolphins have been granted “non-human personhood” status by the government of India, making India the first nation in the world to recognize the unique intelligence and self-awareness of the cetacean order (a class of aquatic mammals). The decision was announced by India’s Minister of the Environment and Forests which also outlawed captive dolphin shows. The ministry added that dolphins “should have their own specific rights.” (SOURCE)!!!whoaOkay this is so important guys. Because I don’t care what your feelings are on the matter of dolphins but“non-human personhood”THAT IS SOME REVOLUTIONARY THINKING. I mean we are still working on human personhood, I thought we were decades or even centuries off something like this!I’m not talking about animal rights here. I’m talking about creatures which are not human but which display human or near-human behavior. The Mirror Test isn’t perfect but it’s the best we’ve got to check for self-awareness, and other than bottle-nose dolphins the list of animals that have observed to pass includes:All great apes (Bonobos, Chimps, Orangutans, Gorillas)OrcasElephantsEuropean Magpies (some other Corvids are speculated to be capable but haven’t been tested)(Pigs and Lesser Primates don’t exactly pass but are in a sort of grey area, which is why I no longer eat pig.)You know what doesn’t pass the mirror test? Humans under the age of about 18 months. These animals are more self-aware than human infants. And just take a look at that list and ask yourself how many of those creatures are endangered. OH SHIT.So yeah. “Non-human personhood”. I am stoked.wow this is important -- source link
