Mt. Vernon From the Lawn, Fairfax County, 1974. The house is usually photographed from the Potomac River side. The many slaves needed for upkeep of the extensive grounds not to mention those who worked in the house and the much larger number who toiled in the fields to produce the tobacco which payed for the lavish life led by Washington and his family, formed a substantial labor force. Whatever his military and civic virtues, Washington was also a slave owner. His wealth and personal comfort depended on the coerced labor of the slaves at Mt. Vernon and on several other properties he controlled. -- source link
