my18thcenturysource:“Garden Party on the Terrace of a Country Home“, ca. 1725, Anonymous, Denver Art Museum.Folding screens are (believe it or not) a very New Spanish thing, and people used them for dividing spaces, and of course they should be decorative (because why not?). The painted scenes are usually about daily life, showing parties, or dances. This one shows a garden party in which people play cards, smoke, flirt, drink or play music. This folding screen is part of the collection of the Denver Art Museum, and there are very few in existence (about a dozen or so), all were made in Mexico City in the 18th century (if you went to the Pinxit Mexici exhibition, there was another folding screen there), and this one is the only in an U.S. museum. And I don’t know about you, but I see at least two outfits I’d like to try and make! -- source link
