Despite the region’s long history of colonialism and slavery, artists from Europe and throughout the Americas created idealized images of an allegedly tranquil and racially harmonious Caribbean society. Such representations contrast with Francisco Oller’s more realistic images of Puerto Rico.In Figure in a Landscape (ca. 1893) an Afro-Puerto Rican blends into the richly depicted mountainous landscape, shown just before the onset of a thunderstorm—an example of Oller’s direct observation of nature.
