sassaphrass:Pompey Magnus, Gauis Julius Caesar and Marcus Crassus made up what is called the first triumvirate. Pompey was the most famous and powerful general of the period. Gauis Julius Caesar was of a very great and noble lineage as well as being a cutthroat and successful political manipulator (with some military experience) and Marcus Crassus was the richest man in Rome at that time. Allied together they were able to take unofficial control of the governing processes of the Roman Republic in order to further their own ambitions. Unlike the Second Triumvirate the First never had an formal acknowledgement or granting of powers by the Roman Senate. The alliance was dissolved first by Marcus Crassus’ death and then by the death of Caesar’s daughter Julia which effectively ended the alliance between Pompey Magnus and Julius Caesar.Pompey and Caesar’s dispute eventually caused a civil war. Caesar was victorious and named himself dictator.Bene! -- source link
