Daniel Huntington was a star in the New York art world of the mid-nineteenth century, and the fledgling Brooklyn Institute (later the Brooklyn Museum) thought he was so important that they commissioned this painting from him. He might have chosen to identify his model as a Jewess because of popular Romantic literary characters like Rebecca from Sir Walter Scott’s adventure novel Ivanhoe. It’s fitting that this painting of an artist at work was one of the first to enter the Museum’s collection. You can see it in Luce Visible Storage, just off of the American art galleries.
