Eskimo DominoesThe game of Dominoes began in China during the Middles Ages and became popular in Europe during the 1700’s as traders and explorers brought back good from the Far East.  One unexpected group to take up the game were the Inuit tribes of the North American Arctic and subarctic.  In the 1800’s Europeans searching for wealth in furs and ivory brought the game with them, and many Inuit peoples became fascinated with the pastime.The Inuits, however, would take the game to the next level.  Many variations of the game existing with each tribe preferring their own rules.  The number and combinations of pips differed, with some holding over a dozen pips on one side of a piece.  The number of pieces varied between 60 and 148.  Sometimes pieces could be shaped into long strips, some where traditional rectangular tiles, while others could be made into a hodgepodge of different shapes and sizes, creating complex and intricate patterns as the game progressed.  Typically the pieces were made from local materials that were in ready supply, such as bone or walrus tusk ivory. Some other popular games brought by the Europeans were juggling, darts, and cribbage. -- source link
