jocarthage:I’ve been enjoying reading @maeglinthebold delightful Sir Guerin and the Green Knight both because it’s fun and chock-full of medieval tropes, but because I love when someone writes fics in a world they know intimately. The author has an academic background in medieval romances – in all their raunchy, fey-trickster-y, gender-complicating glory – and this fic feels like the kind of bananas ride a lot of medieval romances turn out to be. A lot of times, people who’s only contact with pre-19th century literature came in survey courses in college think that the writings of earlier times were stuffy or boring (not you, dear readers; you are far more evolved. But for others, we know this to be true). This fic reminds me of an article I read on Tor.com last month, with a medieval historian making the case that A Knight’s Tale (yes, the one with Heath Ledger) is the ultimate medieval history movie. So, go and check-out Sir Guerin and the Green Knight.Creator’s notes for the above graphic:The main font is BlackChancery, available for free hereThe castle at the top of the hill is actually the letters MAM (for Maria, Alex, Michael) from the MedievalAlphabetFont, available free here (each letter is illustrated like you might find in a medieval manuscript)The knight approaching the castle is actually the Green Knight, from a late 14th century illuminated manuscriptHere’s a neat list of medieval fonts, if you’re working on something like this. @jocarthage -- source link
