pixelrey:“In the first trilogy, the hardest thing Luke could be told in that moment was that Vader was his father. That turns everything on its head for Luke. It takes away all the easy answers and makes him face the hardest thing—which is that, ‘I no longer have just a bad guy I can hate. Suddenly that thing that I thought was the bad guy is actually a part of me.’ For Rey, I think it’s the exact opposite; if she were told that she’s related to this person, or Luke is her this, or whatever, that’d be the easiest thing she could hear. That’s everything she wants. That would instantly define what her place is in this universe. So, to me, the equivalent of ‘I am your father’ is ‘No, you’ve got to stand on your two feet, there are not going to be those easy answers here for you’” — Rian Johnson in the Balance of the Force featurette for TLJActually, I think that if Kylo had told Rey that Luke was her father [or uncle], while putting his own spin on it “he mislaid you like a broken power-converter and never searched for you, he recognized you as soon as you showed up but he didn’t bother to tell you the truth, obviously Luke Skywalker is THE WORST, I know all about being betrayed by Luke, only I can understand your pain”, Rey would have been devasted, not joyous - and it would have made Kylo’s offer to rule the galaxy with him much more tempting.OTOH, if it had been LUke who told her about her non-important-in-the-grand-scheme-of-things origins “yeah, I can see in your surpressed memories that your parents were junk traders who sold you to pay their bar-tab, stop crying ffs, being jedi royalty isn’t much fun either, how many times do I have to tell you that I’m not your therapist or your new dad?” her running away to try and save Kylo would have made somewhat more sense.(To be honest, I think Rian Johnsson had a kind of impossible task - he had to make some reveal about Rey’s parents, yet there was no way it could be the game-changer the Vader reveal in ESB was. And I accept that “Rey Nobody with some added trauma” was the solution he liked best, I just don’t think the execution was all that.) -- source link
