kvetchlandia:Uncredited Photographer Participants in “Freedom Summer,” Mississippi 1964Freedom Summer was an effort uniting students from throughout the United States with Civil Rights organizations in the South, which brought students to Mississippi in order to register black people to vote. Needless to say, Jim Crow segregation and discrimination had prevented blacks from exercising their legal right to vote virtually since the collapse of Reconstruction, nearly 90 years earlier. And, in Trumpworld, more than 60 years after Freedom Summer, we still have efforts to deny people their right to vote on account of race (although the reactionaries try to mask this by making other claims). -- source link
