So I thought I would address all the comments in one post: When trying to comfort someone who has been bullied for their weight, most people respond by trying to reassure the targeted person that “they’re not fat, they’re beautiful.” But that only perpetuates the assumption that being fat is not okay, an insult, snd a problem to be solved. If we do this, then that bullied person will learn that their body can evade criticism if and only if it does not change at all. That spells trouble. The question for people trying to unlearn fatphobia then becomes “how do I respond to a friend/child/daughter being fat shamed without trying to reassure her that she is not fat?” Our task is to address the feelings of insults and personal affronts without buying into the assumption that fat is a problem. My advice is to say to the targeted person: “Bodies are supposed to come in all different shapes and sizes, and it’s not okay that someone is trying to make you feel bad about that. You have done nothing wrong. You are only existing in your body.” This way, we can console distressed emotions, but still continue to fight for the day in which yelling “you’re fat!” incites the same connotations and emotional responses as yelling “you have size 7 feet! You have brown hair! You have green eyes! You have big earlobes!” etc. etc. etc. Let’s change the way that we respond to fat bullying by putting the onus back on the perpetrator and reinforce the notion that the targeted person does not need to change a thing about themselves. #fatphobia #nondiet #bodypositive #effyourbeautystandards #fatliberation #Intersectional #bodypositivity #selflove #bodyacceptance #confidence #riotsnotdiets #allbodiesaregoodbodies #socialjustice #humanrights #equality #community #activism #activist #fatpositive #socialchange #socialjusticewarrior #identity #curvy #plussize #fatpositivity #intersectionalfeminist #dietculture #society #fat https://www.instagram.com/p/CB52F6UgHJD/?igshid=ffzey29stq02 -- source link
