Here is the frontispiece to an alluring entry in the #KislakCenter ’s Collection of British and American Fiction (1660-1830). “Letters of an Italian Nun and an English Gentleman” tells its story through the two title character’s correspondence. In the novel the nun, Isabella, implores the gentleman “not to write to me again unless it be to tell me that your reason is returned, and that I shall hear from you no more” (p. 6). While its forbidden love story is scandalous, this work is most controversial for being wrongly attributed to Jean-Jacques Rousseau. This sixth edition is also attributed, with a question mark, to British writer William Combe.
