bag-of-dirt:Russian refugee children flee their village of Yagodny with their belongings during Operation Kutuzov, the first of two Soviet counteroffensives launched by the Soviet Army as part of the Kursk Strategic Offensive Operation, and the bloodiest of the three major operations during the Battle of Kursk. It commenced on 12 July 1943, against Army Group Center (German:Heeresgruppe Mitte) of the German Wehrmacht. Operation Kutuzov was one of two large-scale Soviet operations launched as counteroffensives against Operation Citadel (German: Unternehmen Zitadelle a German offensive operation against Soviet forces in the Kursk salient.
