Jean-Michel Basquiat and Toxic (Torrick Ablack) photographed by Christopher Makos in New York City, 1983. Toxic met Basquiat shortly after his show at the Annina Nosei Gallery in 1982. They both had a Puerto Rican mother and shared similar interests. In November 1982, Toxic and Ramellzee accompanied Basquiat to Los Angeles while he prepared for his March 1983 show at the Gagosian Gallery. They dubbed themselves the Hollywood Africans as a social and political comment of African Americans stereotypes in the entertainment industry. The trio can be seen in Basquiat’s paintings Hollywood Africans in front of the Chinese Theater with Footprints of Movie Stars (1983) and Hollywood Africans (1983). -- source link
