#Rp @def_curls // One of the communities that caught my attention when I first began blogging about curly hair was the Black Brazilian community, also known as the Afro-Brazilian community. They were thriving (and still are) in the curly-hair/natural-hair space. Havia cachos por toda parte e era lindo (there were curls everywhere & it was beautiful ). You know what’s NOT beautiful ? Oppression & racism. Sadly, the Afro-Brazilian community knows all too well about that. Not sure how many people heard about this, but there’s a Brazilian manufacturer of household cleaning agents called #Bombril. In the 1950’s, this brand put out a racist ad for a scouring pad (similar to the Brillo Pad that we have here in the U.S.) called Krespinha. “Crespa” is the word used in Brazil to refer to kinky/curly hair. Bombril, trying to be slick , changed the “C” in “crespa” to a “K” & added the suffix -inha in a weak attempt to disguise their racism when they named their product Krespinha, AS IF the image of the black girl next to the scouring pad with words that translated to “your orders” (implying servitude) didn’t speak volumes. Needless to say, over the years, Afro-Brazilians who wore their natural hair were said (by some) to have “Bombril Hair” (again, similar to Brillo hair). The product seems to have been discontinued at some point, BUT was re-released recently. The re-release caused old wounds to open up for many Afro-Brazilians. Although the item no longer contained the image of a Black girl wearing her natural hair, it still contained the words “Krespinha” which has been used to belittle so many AfroBrazilians for decades & not only that… it was re-released in the midst of everything that is happening in the Black community around the Globe. BUT WAIT, there’s more: This same brand was putting out ads in black face for other products in the 80s & 90s. The audacity & disrespect. Bombril, of course, put out a statement & pulled the product. #SwipeLeft to see what the ads looked like & to brush up on some history.
