kinkycasey: elcualquiera: “If you worried about falling off the bike, you’d never get on.” -Lance Armstrong I actually *do* worry about falling off my bike. I even have nightmares and replay events from rides that could’ve gone horribly wrong. But, I get on anyway. What does that say? It says cycling was a good choice. I’ve actually had one of those events that go horribly wrong. I was rocking along in the bike lane, angle parking to the left and cars backed up at a red light (Australia; we drive on the other side, natch). I was watching both sides for any sign of impending stupid. Like a begging for bad luck, stupid came along in nearly the worst possible way: Just a few car-lengths in front of me, an SUV did a no-signal, hard left out of traffic into a space she had just noticed – directly into my path. At 30kph, I didn’t have time to stop in a controlled way (and I admit I don’t think I ever considered it). I locked the brakes hard, front and back and launched myself over the handlebars and into a tumble. I missed her SUV and its tow bar by about 30cm, but the asphalt caught me pretty well, and I ended up with a full body bruise starting from the back of my skull and down my back to my waist and butt. My left shoulder popped out of joint (this is not a new thing). Most importantly, the mount for my bike computer disintegrated. She got out of her vehicle and expressed surprise at the large MAMiL (middle-aged man in lycra) in the bike lane sans bike. Whilst I was righting myself, two more cyclists stopped, and the guy in the little Jetta behind the SUV driver hopped out of his car. Whilst the cyclists started screaming at the lady – no turn signal, obviously no mirror use, etc., the Jetta driver helped me up and then yelled when I used the SUV’s spare tire to jam my shoulder back into joint (like I said, this is not a new thing for me). I vaguely recall accepting the woman’s apology whilst looking for my missing bike computer. I got back on my bike and rode another 25km to finish out my loop for that day, because stupid should never, ever be allowed to spoil a beautiful ride along the beach. -- source link
