adrnired:as a note: yes, one is an opinion piece and one is an article, which do not hold the same weight in a purely news view. HOWEVER, in this era specifically (Covid, 2020-2021, etc.) it’s become clear that in addition to opinions being published that contradict official news articles, very harmful opinions are being allowed to run because news publications are at risk of liability if they silence “opposing” viewpoints, because it seems as if they’re only picking and choosing which narratives to publish. It’s also clear with the amount of power and consequence opinion pieces can hold (hello, NYT) that there must be heftier screening processes for opinion pieces. Most opinion pieces are normally just that: opinions. But currently, the sentiments spread by these (generally informed!) opinion pieces is costing lives rather than simply ruffling peoples’ feathers inter-generationally. Sure, people need to understand the difference between opinion and fact articles. But! At the same time, opinion writers and especially editors must be held responsible for the consequences of their writing. reblogging this also bc I’m seeing people in the notes dismissing OP as “distorting” the original articles - which it isn’t. i’ve seen this phenomenon in the SF Chronicle where i live also. it’s the same phenomenon of these papers distorting the issue in subtle says through platforming certain opinions irresponsibly as well as framing news articles in biased or slanted ways -- source link
