areistotle:hello loves!!! this is another post for struggling english students about annotating [it can be for personal use too or for non-struggling english students but whatever]requested by: live-love-liberty <3booksget reading!!!read one to understand, read twice to annotate [i find this works best for me]identify plot, theme, setting, characters, figures of speech, vocab etc when doing ur second readingi like having a paper to write on for different characters [one for each] as it helps when writing important details + quotes + checking out character development as the story goesthat reminds me, make sure u know the most important quotes and where they occur in the bookcheck out usual questions asked by your teacher/exam board etc. and take them as what you should annotate [for example, our book called ‘the heart of the matter’ by graham greene deals with failure a lot, so we get asked about it multiple times, therefore best be prepared for this usual question]write in pencil next to ur book for notesor keep a paper with page numbers and important notesor use your computer!!u may highlight too but don’t highlight too much because you’ll end up highlighting everything + realise that u made nothing to be importanti like to take vocab notes for words i don’t know the meaning of but this is completely optional so choose what works best for youpoetrycheck out my gr8 lit crit mind map!!!! [basically all i’m mentioning here is written there]reading other poetry always helps so u know how to deal with things like that during examscheck out criticism of the poem ur writing about onlineread the poemcheck out words u don’t understand + write them downidentify the rhyme schemecount the syllables in each word and list themidentify literary devices used [like metaphors, similes etc]identify imagery using the sensesclosely identify punctuation, it’s rly important!!checking out if the poet uses a specific theme like colours/animals etc can also be helpfulread the poem again + again until u get a better understanding [if possible read it aloud]don’t worry if u write an interpretation that has nothing to do with what ur teacher’s interpretation is [if yours makes sense + u can support it by certain statements of course!]good links + some nice stuff i like to use too!!for criticismpoetry foundationyoung poets networkwilfred owen associationsparknotesshakespearean english translated to modern englishgrade saverhope you guys enjoyed this and it comes in handy!! feel free to request a masterpost and if you have any questions i’ll definitely answer them <3 good luck annotating!!! -- source link
