capricious-muse: substancesauce: capricious-muse: Today. My mom slayed the whole stage. Is that a dead animal on the front of her skirt?? Yes. This outfit is traditionally only worn by chiefs and because my mother is a chief (Chief Odufa of Okpella, Nigeria as of 2005 to be exact; that’s our hometown), the Congolese people whose tribe taught her this dance (Mu’Twashe from Kinshasa, DRC) had this outfit especially made for her when they found out she was in fact a legitimate chief. It is a high form of respect and status.Mu’Twashe is also a social dance done during courtship (it literally means ‘to poke’), and was originally done by sorcerers in the bush during its earliest practice. So yes, that dead animal was skinned especially for her as a sign of respect. -- source link
