#Repost @350tacoma (@get_repost)・・・For this week’s #52INTHE253 action, we went to Tacoma City Hall to stand with the tenants of the Tiki Apartments, many of whom were given just 20 days to move after a Seattle developer bought their building. Facing sudden displacement and possible homelessness, the tenants and their supporters descended on city hall to express their outrage and demand justice. And, by the end of the week, they had won an extension and passed a Tenants Rights Law that gives 90 days notice for similar evictions and establishes a relocation assistance fund. If you’re wondering how this relates to 350 Tacoma’s climate work, well …climate justice IS social justice. The same flawed economic system that allows our society’s most vulnerable to be pushed from stable housing into homelessness, is the same flawed system that allows a corporate bully like Puget Sound Energy to build a climate-busting fracked gas LNG refinery on disputed Puyallup Tribal treaty territory, all while sticking utility ratepayers with a bill to pay nearly half of the cost ($134 million) to build it. Once you start to see the intersections of injustice, you realize that we really do need to change just about everything to solve the climate crisis.
