Blue glacial ice on a black sand beach. These photos were taken onthe south-east coast of Iceland near Vatnajökull National Park(February 2017).When glacial ice is white, it is because it still has many tiny airbubbles. Bubbles and particles scatter the light within the ice.But when glacial ice is very dense and free of bubbles, if oftenappears blue. Years of compression have gradually made the icedenser, forcing out the tiny air pockets between crystals. Thisallows the light to penetrate deep into the surface before itreflects back. This increases the tendency for the ice to absorb asmall amount of red or infrared light, leaving a bluish tint in thereflected light. -- source link
