In September, this animal mummy will be joining theexhibition Lost Egypt, a long term loan developed by the Columbus Instituteof Science. As part of the conservation treatment, it is important to fully document the object. For a closed object like this mummy, it was necessary to use x-radiography to image the internal contents. Conservators acquired several digital x-rays of the object, and were amazed by the complete skeleton preserved inside. It was immediately apparent that the remains are not those of an ibis, as was previously expected. We reached out to veterinarians Dr. Anthony Fischetti with the Animal Medical Center and Dr. Andrew Major with the Raptor Trust, who helped identify the animal as a falcon. Now the conservators are working with the curators to interpret this information! Posted by Kate Becker -- source link
