slobbered: kvetchlandia: Hi qrye. Thank you for your comment. Let me make this perfectly clear, I have no problem with people posting whatever they like, whether in written or pictorial form, so long as what they post is legal and is consensual. I choose not to post explicitly sexual images because I have no desire to do so. If that’s you’re thing, I have no problem with your posting whatever you’re into, no matter how explicit it might be, so long as it portrays consensual acts between adults. The nature of those acts is irrelevant to me. I think I’ve made it clear that I am a total opponent of the new censorship regime at Tumblr. I believe that Verizon/Tumblr has the money and the technical expertise to create software that will allow people to block images they don’t want to see and although I don’t believe children are the property of their parents, I believe that Verizon/Tumblr also has the capacity to produce software that will allow parents to control what their kids see (which the kids, once they’re past 10 or 11 years old will figure out how to bypass anyway). If people don’t want to see porn, they don’t have to frequent porn pages. Similarly, if they don’t want to be followed by pages that feature porn, or are porn bots, they can simply block those pages. Tumblr already allows you to do those things. Regarding things that are illegal, such as kiddie porn, there are already significant laws against such things. Verizon/Tumblr has the capacity to identify sites that feature such things and to either cancel them or report them to authorities. This new censorship regime at Tumblr is an entirely different thing. It is not aimed at “protecting” anyone. It is politically conservative, culturally philistine, motivated by religious puritanism and is utterly hypocritical. Nonetheless, it is as of Dec 17 Tumblr reality. This is well stated but I highly suggest that we leave politics and religion out of this discussion. Those with the power to regulate speech are only able to do so if they are not checked by the unanimous will of those they wish to silence. Religion and politics have always been the tools of demagogues to tribalise the masses so they can divide and conquer. We need to recognize those tactics and remain unified and resolute if we hope to win the war of ideas and put an end to censorship. -- source link
