Pretty Deadly Photoshoot with JwaiDesignImmediately after reading Pretty Deadly, Ashley Hay and I fell in love with the poetic story by Kelly Sue DeConnick, and otherworldly visuals from the talented Emma Ríos. Planning a photoshoot was soon underway, although it would be nearly a year before we suited up as Alice and Ginny (with incredible makeup by KeltonFX) and drove hours out to the Salton Sea in southern California to shoot with the talented JwaiDesign. We wanted to tell a story through the photos, culminating in Alice’s death in an explosion of butterflies (a practical effect via a fishing line harness), capturing exactly what makes the book so unique - finding beauty in death.
