Bierstadt Brothers: Waterfall in the White Mountains, New Hampshire, 1860.Anyone interested in landscape photography (and I suspect that is true of most of those who follow this tumblr) should make a bee line for the National Gallery of Art’s current exhibit: East of the Mississippi: Nineteenth-Century American Landscape Photography (Ground Floor Galleries, West Building). Usually the West is brought to mind when 19th century landscape photography in the US is discussed, but there was much impressive work east of the Mississippi. A fine sample is included in this exhibit which runs through mid-July.The Bierstadt brothers Charles and Edward worked out of New Bedford, Massachusetts. Their brother Albert was the famed landscape painter, known for his large and dramatic pictures of sites in the mountain west and along the Pacific Coast. The brothers sometimes worked together, and there is a painting of this waterfall in Albert’s oeuvre based on a joint expedition to the White Mountains. -- source link
