lionofchaeronea:Demeter and Queen Metaneira of Eleusis. The scene may reflect an incident in the Homeric Hymn to Demeter: the goddess, disguised as an elderly nursemaid, had been attempting to make Metaneira’s son Demophoon immortal by placing him in the hearth fire at night; Metaneira discovered her and cried out. Now Demeter has revealed her true form, and Metaneira propitiates the goddess, begging for forgiveness. Belly of an Apulian red-figure hydria, attributed to the Varrese Painter; ca. 340 BCE. Now in the Altes Museum, Berlin. -- source link
